What 24-Hour and 12-Hour Time Actually Mean
Every clock on earth measures the same 24 hours in a day — the only thing that changes is how those hours get written down. The 24-hour clock (also called military time or "full time") numbers every hour once, from at midnight through just before the next midnight. The 12-hour clock instead splits the day into two identical 12-hour laps — AM for midnight to just before noon, and PM for noon to just before midnight — and reuses the numbers 1 through 12 twice.
Neither format is "more correct." The 24-hour clock removes any chance of mixing up morning and evening on a schedule, which is why hospitals, airlines, railways, and armed forces rely on it. The 12-hour clock is simply what most English-speaking countries grew up saying out loud, so it stays the default for everyday conversation, wall clocks, and casual scheduling. This tool moves a time between the two instantly, in either direction.

How to Convert 24-Hour Time to 12-Hour Time
To convert 24-hour time to 12-hour AM/PM time, keep the minutes exactly as written and change only the hour and the AM/PM label. Four rules cover every possible time of day:
| 24-Hour Range | Rule | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 00:00–00:59 | Change 00 to 12 and add AM | 00:30 = 12:30 AM |
| 01:00–11:59 | Keep the hour, add AM, drop the leading zero | 09:15 = 9:15 AM |
| 12:00–12:59 | Keep 12, add PM | 12:45 = 12:45 PM |
| 13:00–23:59 | Subtract 12, add PM | 18:20 = 6:20 PM |
The two hours people trip up on most are midnight and noon, because both involve the number 12. Midnight (00:00) becomes 12:00 AM, not "0:00 AM" — and noon (12:00) becomes 12:00 PM, not "0:00 PM." Everywhere else, the rule is pure arithmetic.
Military Time to Standard Time
The 24-hour clock is often called military time, especially in the United States, because it's the format armed forces use to avoid AM/PM confusion during operations. It uses the exact same hours as standard 24-hour time — 00 through 23 — but is usually written as four digits with no colon and read aloud digit by digit: 0700 is "oh-seven-hundred," 1900 is "nineteen-hundred."
| Military Time | Standard Time |
|---|---|
| 0000 | 12:00 AM |
| 0800 | 8:00 AM |
| 1200 | 12:00 PM |
| 1600 | 4:00 PM |
| 2130 | 9:30 PM |

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert 24-hour time to 12-hour time?
Keep the minutes the same. If the hour is 00, change it to 12 AM. If the hour is 01 to 11, keep it as AM. If the hour is 12, keep it as PM. If the hour is 13 to 23, subtract 12 and add PM.
What is 00:00 in 12-hour time?
00:00 is 12:00 AM. It marks midnight, the start of a new day.
What is 12:00 in 12-hour time?
12:00 is 12:00 PM. It marks noon, not midnight.
What is 13:00 in 12-hour time?
13:00 is 1:00 PM. For any 24-hour time from 13:00 to 23:59, subtract 12 from the hour and use PM.
Is 24-hour time the same as military time?
They're very similar. Standard 24-hour time is usually written with a colon, such as 14:30, while military time is often written without one, such as 1430.
Do minutes change when converting 24-hour time to 12-hour time?
No. Minutes stay exactly the same. 21:45 becomes 9:45 PM, not 9:00 PM.
How do I convert 12-hour time back to 24-hour time?
For AM times, keep the hour the same except 12:00 AM, which becomes 00:00. For PM times, keep 12:00 PM as 12:00 and add 12 to hours from 1 PM through 11 PM.
Why do hospitals, airlines, and the military use 24-hour time?
24-hour time gives every moment of the day one unique number, which removes any risk of confusing morning and evening times on schedules, records, or flight boards.
Can I convert multiple times at once?
Not yet on this page — batch conversion for pasted schedules and timetables is on the roadmap as a dedicated tool.
Does the converter need my location or timezone?
No. This tool only changes the display format of a time you enter; it does not shift it between timezones.
